Taking a break with a summer cocktail

Cotton & Flax coasters

I’ve been hard at work preparing for Renegade Craft Fair the last few weeks, which means long hours cutting fabric, silkscreen printing, sewing, and ironing. Don’t get me wrong – I love my work, and the feeling of flow I get while I’m working is incredibly fulfilling – but it’s also pretty exhausting when I am preparing for a big show.

moscow muleOne of the hardest things about that grueling schedule is that LA has been pretty darn hot lately, getting into the mid 90’s most days. I drink lots of ice water during the day to stay cool (the AC unit in the studio is unreliable, to put it nicely), but in the evenings, I’ve been cooling off with my favorite cocktail, a Moscow Mule. While I don’t drink it in a copper cup, which is apparently the traditional presentation, it’s just as cool and refreshing in a regular glass.

The recipe is simple: 1/2 ounce lime juice, a few ice cubes, 2 oz. vodka, and 4-6 oz. ginger beer (not ginger ale)

I may even make a non-alcoholic version to enjoy during the day! A little sparkling ginger lemonade sounds pretty good as well. If you have a drink to recommend to help me stay cool, let me know in the comments!

I love the dark & stormy version of your drink, same thing, just with a dark rum.

My other favourite non boozy summer drinks are a limeade from the Puerto Rican place (the Internet just says it’s a lot of like juice, water, simple syrup. I love lime juice!) and a strawberry lemonade (I’ve had some recently made with the foodwishes.com Balsamic Strawberry sauce, just made without the cornstarch poured into already prepared Newman’s Own Virgin Lemobade – the best store bought I’ve found – nice & pulpy!)

I just wanted to add I love your blog and your beautiful simple graphic wares. I haven’t yet had the joy of buying any (the postcards, coasters, tea towels and pillows all call out to me! I love the greys and the pink postcards are SO pretty!) but hope to soon. I use your iPhone wallpapers and really really enjoy them. I still don’t know how I found your site but I am SO glad I did! I forget, will you be at the SF renegade (did I miss it?)? If so I may try and make that to pick something up finally!

Good luck! I used to screenprint by hand (serigraphy) in college in Oklahoma in the summer and won’t easily forget how annoying accidentally sweating in the ink is. >.<

I love a good dark & stormy! And I’ve been drinking some great lemonades this summer (cherry lemonade is my new favorite), so it sounds like we have similar taste :)

Thanks so much for your kind words. If you’re in San Francisco, I’ll be selling Cotton & Flax wares at Renegade Craft Fair at Fort Mason Center on the 27th and 28th. Stop by and say hi!
